NAR continues to advocate the importance of a comprehensive natural disaster insurance policy to Members of Congress. Several bills have been introduced in the House of Representatives and Senate, but Congress is not likely to enact legislation before it adjourns this year. The issue is gaining momentum, however, as shown by the interest of the House Committee on Financial Services, which has held a hearing and is expected to hold at least one more this fall on this subject. NAR is taking the lead in formulating solutions to the problem of protecting homeowners in case of emergencies and disasters. NAR sponsored a one-day symposium on September 18, 2006 in Washington, D.C., on natural disaster policy solutions featuring REALTORS^®, key stakeholders (e.g. mortgage bankers, homebuilders, insurance organizations and others), and members of Congress or their staff.
